Baguette

Baguette Claimed

One of the greatest aromas in the world

Description

One of the greatest aromas in the world is the one emanating from an oven as bread is baked to perfection. Imagine then, the joy of food lovers in Colombo when you take authentic French bread, made with the best ingredients, warm out of the oven daily and sell it at ridiculously affordable prices in the heart of Colombo. That is Baguette for you!

It all started off as little outlet down Flower Road and then became a delivery only service, until they opened their brand new bakery at Thummulla junction recently. Conveniently located this, the first French Bakery in Sri Lanka was definitely one of our top priorities to visit. We weren’t disappointed.

The owner of Baguette Nathalie Pujolle was on hand to assist us from the moment we walked into the bright delicatessen with rows and rows of freshly baked goodies. Baguette also sports a very different type of menu cum product information catalogue. Not only does it give you images and a listing of products and prices, but it also gives you instructions on how to serve each of the wares, and even how to store them.

Using only the freshest ingredients like wheat, rye, maize, barley and spelt flour kneaded together with everything from fried onions to chilli, curry leaves, rosemary, walnuts, cheese and chocolate, Baguette’s product list is endless. After a detailed demonstration of what is what and how to cut and enjoy your bread, Nathalie invited us to order.

Our choices were simple as we wanted to try the breads in their most natural form. The white baguette sandwich was two hefty slices with a generous serving of salami in it. The bread itself is crispy on the outside and super soft on the inside. The salty salami which is also imported from Europe goes so well with the dry crunch of the bread that you don’t really need anything else in it.

We also had the traditional Focaccia which comes topped with chilli, curry leaves or rosemary. We had ours with the curry leaves and loved it. The soft bread with the fried crunchy curry leaves make a perfect snack for when you are on the go, as do the croissants we ordered. The plain one is nothing but plain with a hint of butter that just melts in your mouth. They also have the all-time-favourite chocolate which unlike other bakeries have a huge dollop of chocolate inside.

Baguette was also previously well-known for their Macaroons and again they are arguably the best we’ve had in town. Ranging from a variety of flavours their pack of 5 is quite reasonable if you can’t decide which one to try. We also tried a walnut packed pie which to say the very least about it, left us feely overly nutty!

The bakery also takes pre-orders and need 24-hours notice for breads and at least 3-days for cakes. All orders can be picked up from the Colombo 5 outlet.
