Barista WTC

The Barista coffee house chain is one of the most widespread in the island from the main cities in the Western Province to key tourist hotspots around the island. One of their oldest outlets is situated at the heart of the commercial capital at the World Trade Centre. The outlet was recently given a facelift and we visited to them to see the difference.

Barista is one of the only convenient, quick bite cafes in the vicinity of many corporate offices and with tons of expatriates working in the twin towers, an internationally recognized chain is a welcome addition. Also taking in to account the round the clock working hours of some of the offices in the building the Barista outlet opens up nice and early at 7am and remains open till 7pm daily except on Sundays.

The facelift has created more space at the outlet which means you can sit down and sip a coffee and bite in to a sandwich while overlooking the views from the currently tallest building in the country. Since this is a more pick-up-and-go kind of outlet we tried their executive breakfast deals.

One of the deals is where you get to combine your favourite sandwich with a hot or cold beverage for a minimal cost. The choice of sandwiches include Pol Sambol and Fried Egg with Cheese, Ham and Cheese with Mustard, Cheese and Tomato, Spicy Polos or the latest addition of the Devilled Sprats and Cheese. We chose the last of the list since it was the newest on the menu and found it to be quite nice. The spicy crunchiness of the fried sprats go well with the cheese but it could’ve done with a little more flavour in terms of salt and spices. We paired it with a regular Cappuccino which was quite good. Barista used Lavazza coffee beans from Italy which have a strong flavour and aroma which is great if you want a wake-up-call on a sleepy weekday.

If you prefer to sit down and have a proper breakfast then also try “The Works” which is Barista’s take on the full English breakfast. You can choose your bread from white or brown and the breakfast includes a Sri Lankan omelet, Bockwurst sausages, baked beans, butter and jam served with a coffee of your choice. We chose an Espresso. In comparison to some of the other cafes that serve full English, this is reasonably priced but we did feel they could add on a bit more in terms of some chips and tomatoes or a green salad on the side.

All in all the place looks a lot better than what it was but we did feel the food and service could also use a facelift. Barista does pretty well with their coffee and maybe need to be a bit more innovative when it comes to the food.
