Barracuda Seafood & Grill

Within a span of five years, Barracuda on Wasala Road, Dehiwela has become quite the hangout spot not just for groups of friends but also for families wanting to spend a Sunday afternoon enjoying some good seafood. Situated on a stretch of beach that is constantly crowded, the restaurant is almost always buzzing with activity and we decided to drop by to try out some fresh seafood cooked to recipes from around the world. Barracuda recently launched an Italian menu as well which we wanted to sample.

Location-wise Barracuda is pretty simple to find and is easily noticeable even as you drive along Marine Drive. Crossing the railway line to actually get to the restaurant and walking on the sandy beaches barefoot is an experience we love no matter where we dine on the beach strip from Wellawatte to Mount Lavinia. The restaurant itself is tastefully done combining the natural elements of the beach with some modern design and architecture.

Because they don’t serve alcohol and its BYOB the place also attracts a lot of families celebrating special occasions and the function room can accommodate up to 100 people at a time. When we visited the place was so busy and it resulted in the wait staff taking some time to actually get to us and take our orders. Once we had ordered it also took them a considerable amount of time to bring out the food. We didn’t mind too much though because it was nice to sit back, unwind and catch the views.

For drinks we ordered a Sex on the Beach, a Gummy Bear and a Banana Chocolate Milkshake. Let’s talk about the one in the middle which was a blend of Lemonade and Blue Curacao. Super refreshing and just the right amount of sweetness made this one our favourite of the three.

We misread the menu and ordered three different types of soup thinking it was individual bowls but the servings ended up being enough for two. Kudos to Barracuda on portion size. So we were overflowing with Cream of Tomato, Hangzhou-style Beef Soup and Chinese-style Thick Tomato Soup. The Cream of Tomato which was also the Soup of the Day was served with Cheese Toast and we absolutely loved the spicy tomato taste. The beef soup was also a great entrée with the hint of coriander making your mouth water even before the first bite.

We accompanied the soup with two starters, namely a portion of Prawn Toast with Sesame Seeds and Mongolian Chicken Wings. The sweet chilli sauce served with the Prawn Toast was delectable but it was the Mongolian spiny sauce that came with the wings that really got our taste buds working. For mains we ordered a classic Barracuda Mixed-Grill (Enough to share among three), a Chicken Lasagna, Thai Red Beef Curry, Hot Butter Cuttlefish and Yang Chow-style Beef Fried Rice. While the curries and rice were moderately good we are pretty happy with the lasagna which wasn’t too soggy and had a great taste of Oregano and Tomato, but it was the Mixed Grill that really stole the show.

After all that food we had just enough room for some Cream Caramel, Chocolate Biscuit Pudding and a Sizzling Chocolate Brownie with Ice-Cream. Of the three the Brownie which was soft and gooey in texture was the sure winner with the Vanilla Ice-Cream perfectly balancing out the textures and flavours.

Barracuda really surprised us with their value for money. Although your final bill has all the tax components added on the fact that most dishes are shareable among 3-4 adults means you actually order less. We definitely recommend them for larger groups as it makes a lot more sence price-wise.
