Café Kai Claimed

Hilton Colombo's irresistible cafe!

Description

“Kai” is a Japanese word that when translated means “food”. This is the primary focus of Hilton Colombo’s lobby bistro that serves gourmet savouries and sweet delights throughout the day. Located on the left hand side of the main lobby, Kai is actually the first sight you come across when you enter and is quite a welcome one. The food displays are loaded with pastries and sandwiches, tarts and every type of bakery item you can think of and those cakes from Hilton that most of us love. Surrounded by the displays is an open bar where your coffees and drinks are prepared skillfully.

We visited for breakfast early on a weekday and found a few people having business meetings. Despite the place being relatively busy, once we had placed our orders it didn’t take long for the food to come out. Note that this is a self-service café and all the all-day dining menus are conveniently displayed around the counter tops, as is the drinks menu.

Since it was pretty early in the morning and we needed a good coffee to wake us up we picked an unorthodox Cheesecake Latte and just in case that didn’t turn out so great a classic Hot Chocolate. But we were wrong the Latte actually turned out to be superb. The strong taste of coffee blended perfectly with the tangy flavour of cheesecake to create a very unique taste which we really liked. The hot chocolate was good but we wished it could’ve been a bigger portion. Something to consider.

Instead of going for the usual display savouries we ordered an All Day Breakfast, a good ol’ Eggs Benedict and a Half-roasted Spring Chicken. Let’s start with that one. As its name suggests the chicken was a hefty piece of chicken, crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. There was quite a hint of oregano in the spice mix which we also liked. Served with mashed potatoes, gravy, glazed beans and carrots this is quite a hefty meal.

The Eggs Benedict at Kai comes with either Smoked Salmon or Chicken Ham and we just had to go with the salmon. We weren’t disappointed. The precision cut salmon was smoked to perfection and served on a bed of sautéed spinach and toasted rye bread which added the crisp to every bite.

We are the type to have breakfast at any time of day or night and are super pleased that Kai does a good version of an All-Day packed with eggs the way you like it (we had scrambled), toast, chicken ham or pork bacon (we had the bacon obviously!), chicken or pork sausages (pork sausages for us!), potato pancakes, sautéed mushrooms, baked beans, mixed salad and butter. Sounds like too much for one person you say? Wrong! You can literally wolf this down in minutes coz everything is just done right!

We loved our experience at Café Kai and highly recommend it for business meetings or casual chats any time of day.
