Cakes & Bakes Restaurant

Cakes & Bakes has both a cafe and restaurant so if you want to grab a quick bite on the go or want to catch up with friends after work, this place is ideal. Conveniently located on Galle Road, Cakes & Bakes Restaurant has a simple but fulfilling menu that we tried out recently.

As its name suggests the cafe area has a lot of baked goodies while the restaurant is great for comfort food. They have a great variation of salads and appetizers, soups, burgers and sandwiches, submarines, wraps, pastas and lasagnas, rice, risotto, on the grills and also side dishes, a good desert range and beverages like frappes, milkshakes, mocktails, iced tea and others.

Concentrating heavily on Mediterranean cuisine, the ambiance at the restaurant also reflects a very Middle Eastern touch. The drinks however are more intercontinental and we ordered an Oreo Shake, Lime Mint and Cucumber Cooler and a Tutti Frutti Smoothie. The Oreo Shake was the regular Milk Shake with Oreos in it but had a good blend with none of the ingredients overpowering the others. Our Favourite however was the pretty pink Tutti Frutti which is combination of pineapple, papaya, banana and sugar syrup. Although it highlighted more of the banana flavour, this drink was thick and creamy.

Since we wanted to try the gamut of offerings on the menu, we ordered a Chick Pea and Avocado Salad, Chilli Cheesy Fries and a Chicken Kofta Ball Soup for our starters. The salad which was a helthy mix of lettuce, iceberg lettuce, avocado, onions, tomatoes, cucumber, purple cabbage, and chick peas dressed with paprika and olive oil. Although the portion was large it was a little disappointing as the vegetables were soggy and not so fresh. The Cheesy Fries which was topped with mozzarella and carbonara was also a bit disappointing with the fries being soggy and the presentation not being appetizing enough. The soup was also mediocre but they could improve on the garlic bread that is served with it.

Where the appetizers failed, the mains we ordered made up for it. The Sausage Pasta was pretty good and had a healthy portion of Italian Sausages on top of well cooked pasta. The garlic bread served with it however was again soggy. We also ordered a Pan-fried Fish Fillet served with Boiled Vegetables, Yellow Rice and Lemon Butter Sauce, which was good but not great. The best picks were definitely the Chicken Majboos, an Arabian dish of Yellow Rice topped with Grilled Chicken which was well marinated in a variety of spices including a predominant hint of rosemary. The portion was totally worth the price as was the Beef Fajita we ordered. Sizzling Beef served inside flat bread with a salad of onions and tomatoes was quite light but filling and had generous chunks of tender beef.

Since the restaurant is named Cakes and Bakes we decided to go all out with dessert and ordered Chocolate Lava Cake, Raspberry Cheesecake and Tiramisu. The Dark Chocolate version of Lava Cake is served with Chocolate Ice-Cream and a unique topping of Almond Powder which gives it a distinct flavour which we loved. The cheesecake was a pretty big slice and was quite soft and moist but our favourite was the Tiramisu served with Coffee Sauce that made it really heavenly. If not for any other reason pay a visit just for the desserts.
