Java Lounge (Colombo 7)

Java Lounge recently opened up their latest outlet in a relatively competitive area for coffee houses. Situated down Barnes Place in Colombo 7, the new outlet is more spacious than the original Jawatte Road one, and also has a lot more parking space. Considering that it is also located in the center of town, it’s a great place to catch up with friends or co-workers or even to have a meeting away from work.

The new place can accommodate around 200 people with separate rooms for meetings and private gatherings as well. This outlet too carries the whole cozy vibe that is commonplace with Jawatte Road, and has several couches for chillin’ out on as well. It also has a neat outdoor seating area overlooking the busy streets that we though was a great place to read a book, play some board games or simply people watch.

Being the only coffee chain in Colombo to use original Starbuck coffee beans has always been a plus factor for Java Lounge and they continue the trend at Colombo 7. However, they’ve also introduced some crazy concoctions in terms of the drinks menu two of which we tried and got a bit heady with the sugar rush it gave us. We had a Caramel and Coffee Frappe, a Bombai Muttai Frappe and a Double Espresso with an Extra Shot. The two Frappes were simply picture perfect served in mason jars and overflowing with toppings. The caramel one had wafers and marshmallows while the very pink Bombai Muttai one had tons of candy floss and more wafers. Although pricey at 950 rupees each, be aware that one person cannot possibly finish these drinks and it is advisable to share.

For food we ordered a Chicken Satay starter, Grilled Honey Garlic Chicken, Grilled Seer Fish with Boiled Vegetables, Creamy Chicken Pesto Pasta and a Personal Pan Pizza with Prawn. We certainly loved how the food looked when it was brought to our table, and kudos to the guys doing the plating but the taste of the food was a little disappointing. Our starter satay was really good with the Chicken well-done and the peanut sauce being on point. The pizza was dry and had very few prawns in the actual toppings. The crust was also very hard and chewy. The pasta on the other hand was much better and had lots of parmesan which was a saving grace. The two grilled items were also beautifully plated with lots of colour but bland in the taste department. The chicken was better than the fish because the honey and garlic crust made it a lot more palatable.

The desserts on the other hand were much better than our mains. Our Crème Brule, Red Velvet Cake and the Blueberry Cheesecake were perfectly executed and worth the price we paid for it. Of the three the Crème Brule was our favourite with the custard being super creamy and the caramelized sugar being just the right texture. We would recommend you to go for coffee and desserts here as they do a pretty good job of it.
