The Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya – Heritage Grand Claimed

Grand Hotel

Once the home to the former Governor of Sri Lanka Sir Edward Barnes, the Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya is a testament to this island’s colonial heritage. Surrounded by lush green tea estates, mountains that kiss the blue skies, weather that is reminiscent of the cool climates of England, this little piece of heaven combines nature and history to give holidaymakers an experience of a lifetime.

Despite the long drive to Nuwara Eliya, the anticipation of what awaits you at the grand ol’ dame of luxury in the hillside town makes even the most tiring journey bearable. Our journey was during one of the most exciting times of the year, when the strawberry harvest from the nearby farms have just been brought in. Every year the Grand Hotel in truly its namesake size hosts a grand strawberry festival attended by local and international travelers alike. This year the hotel took grandeur to another level by creating the largest strawberry pizza as a part of the seasonal celebrations.

Situated just 10 minutes from the famed Victoria Park and 15 minutes from Gregory’s Lake, Grand Hotel has tons of activities for holidaymakers of any age. An indoor and outdoor play area for the kids, kids shooting arena, bicycle tours, farm visits, bird watching and nature trails are all a part of activities that one can enjoy during the stay. We however, spent most of our time trying out the multiple restaurants and cuisine options on offer.

We tried everything from the in-house buffet at Magnolia where we particularly liked the live hopper station where you could ask the chef to make everything from green tea to chocolate hoppers. Grand Hotel also boasts a Thai, Indian, Fusion Grill and Pizza Bar that serves authentic wood-fired pizzas. When it comes to food the choices are endless. One our favourite culinary highlights during our stay was the fresh croissant butler who goes around serving croissants in the morning for breakfast with a cup of coffee. Talk about novel service! The hotel also tries to give guests crazy dining experiences with a dining table in the laundry and the kitchen where you can watch your food being prepared and brought straight to your table.

Although it’s a colonial property, our rooms had all the modern amenities one could ask for from cable TV, high speed internet access and IDD phones, safety deposit boxes and much more. Nuwara Eliya is such an ideal place for a vacation when you really need to relax escaping the craziness of city life. It’s great to have a place that has stood the test of time, kept its original grandeur and yet creates memories that last lifetimes.
