Description

The Radh

Playing on a shortened form of the word “Radhala” (Aristocrat), “The Radh” as its name suggests is all about royal treatment. The boutique hotel that is but a year old is located in the heart of Kandy town and is easily accessible no matter what mode of transport you take to get to the hill capital.

The outside façade doesn’t do much justice to the plush interiors of the hotel that takes Kandyan hospitality to another level. A lot of attention to detail is something one notices from the get go. Upon our arrival we were greeted by staff and a wet towel accompanied by Sri Lankan sweet meats. Sourced locally, the Coconut Rock in particular was a welcome treat for a weary traveler.

The Radh as we mentioned earlier pays a lot of attention to detail and aims to recreate the luxurious lifestyle of days gone by. The room that we were escorted to sported modern conveniences but also had a distinct touch of personal attention with the intricately embroidered linen particularly taking our fancy. Apart from the “Deluxe” category rooms, The Radh also boasts four exquisite suites which we caught a glimpse of. The suites are best described as fit for royalty.

Our stay at The Radh also gave us the opportunity to enjoy some Kandyan-inspired Sri Lankan cooking as well as inter-continental favourites from around the world at the all-day dining restaurant. While breakfast is buffet, lunch and dinner work on quite an extensive a la carte menu. For dinner we decided to travel the world through our taste buds and ordered a little bit from every corner. The Italian pasta really took our fancy and we thought it was perfectly executed and the perfect comfort food for Kandy’s chilly evening weather. We finished off this meal with arguably one of the best strawberry cheesecake slices (boy was it a generous slice!) we have had in recent times. Consistency, taste, sweetness to sour ratio were all on point with this one.

One of the highlights in fact of our stay at The Radh was the willingness of the staff to oblige our whims and fancies at any time of day (or night!). For instance we felt like dessert for lunch and the staff would bring out a massive gooey and warm Chocolate Brownie topped with Vanilla Ice-Cream. Service for us is a key component of any place we review and The Radh certainly scores highly in this department.

The hotel’s close proximity to the sacred Temple of the Tooth and the Kandy Lake means sight-seeing is also a breeze and front office staff are happy to make arrangements for tours or provide directions for those who wish to be more adventurous and take a walk. We definitely recommend the second option as Kandy is one of those towns best explored on foot.

Overall our stay at The Radh was a comfortable, enjoyable and memorable one and we certainly would recommend the property to those who visit the hill capital. We ourselves would return to savour the best in terms of royal treatment.
